Oocyte

An oocyte is an immature female germ cell that can develop into an ovum. It undergoes meiosis and acquires the cellular machinery needed for fertilization and early development.

Oogenesis: The process by which female germ cells develop into mature eggs. Oogenesis includes the growth and maturation stages that produce an ovum from an oocyte.
Germ cell: A cell in a lineage that produces gametes. An oocyte is a female germ cell rather than a supporting ovarian cell.
In vitro fertilization: A fertility treatment in which eggs and sperm are combined outside the body and resulting embryos may be transferred to a uterus. IVF retrieves and fertilizes oocytes under controlled laboratory conditions.

Folliculogenesis: The growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, each containing an oocyte. Follicle development supports the oocyte and coordinates its maturation.
Primary oocyte: An oocyte that has entered meiosis I and typically remains arrested in prophase I until maturation resumes. Many oocytes spend years in this developmental stage.
