Open-end spinning

Open-end spinning is a yarn-making process that separates fibers into individual strands and collects them continuously at the open end of a rotating yarn. It forms yarn without maintaining a continuous strand from the supply fibers.

Rotor spinning: A spinning method in which separated fibers collect in a rapidly rotating rotor groove and join a continuously withdrawn yarn. The rotor is the best-known mechanism for forming and twisting the open yarn end.
Sliver: A soft, untwisted strand of aligned textile fibers produced by carding or drawing. Open-end machines commonly feed sliver into the opening unit.
Ring spinning: A spinning method that drafts a fiber strand and twists it using a rotating spindle and ring traveler. Ring spinning preserves a continuous drafted strand, unlike open-end fiber collection.
Rotor-spun yarn: Yarn produced by rotor spinning, typically with a distinctive fiber arrangement and greater bulk than comparable ring-spun yarn. It is the characteristic product of the most widely used open-end system.
Industrialization of textile production: The shift from manual textile work to mechanized, factory-based production. Open-end machinery extended the industrial drive toward faster yarn production.
Opening roller: A toothed roller that separates a fiber sliver into individual fibers for spinning. It breaks the incoming sliver into fibers before they reach the open yarn end.
Staple fiber: A textile fiber of limited length, such as cotton or cut synthetic fiber, rather than a continuous filament. The process handles discrete fibers that must be separated and reassembled.
Air-jet spinning: A spinning method that uses air vortices to wrap fibers around a yarn core. It forms yarn through aerodynamic wrapping rather than collection on a rotating open end.
Denim: A durable cotton or cotton-blend fabric woven with a typically colored warp and lighter weft. Rotor-spun yarn is widely used in denim weft because it supports high-volume production.
Yarn production: The manufacture of yarn from natural or manufactured fibers through spinning or related processes. Open-end spinning is one method within the wider production of yarn.
