Opera seria

Opera seria is a formal genre of eighteenth-century Italian opera built around serious subjects and alternating recitative and solo arias. Its plots often draw on ancient history or mythology.

Da capo aria: A three-part aria whose opening section returns after a contrasting middle section, often with added ornamentation. Its returning A section gives singers room for virtuoso variation within the genre’s recurring aria form.
Ritornello: A recurring instrumental passage that returns between vocal sections or at structural points in a composition. Ritornellos provide musical punctuation and reinforce the shape of many seria arias.
Arcadian Academy: A literary academy founded in Rome in 1690 that promoted reform and simplicity in Italian poetry. Its ideals helped shape the clarity and restraint sought in opera seria libretti.
Opera buffa: An Italian comic opera genre featuring everyday characters, rapid ensembles, and humorous plots. Its comic subjects and ensemble-driven scenes contrast with seria’s heroic characters and solo-centered structure.
Giulio Cesare: George Frideric Handel’s 1724 opera seria about Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, and their political conflict in Egypt. Its arias and shifting alliances exemplify Handel’s dramatic use of seria conventions.
Recitative: A speech-like vocal style that advances dramatic action with flexible rhythm and relatively sparse accompaniment. Recitative carries plot between opera seria’s self-contained arias.
Coloratura: Elaborate vocal ornamentation featuring rapid runs, trills, and other agile passages. Coloratura turns an aria’s emotional reflection into a conspicuous test of a singer’s skill.
