Operation Bagration

A Soviet summer offensive in 1944 that shattered Germany’s Army Group Centre and recaptured most of Belarus during World War II.

Maskirovka: Soviet military deception used to conceal plans, mislead opponents, and protect operational surprise. Deception concealed the scale and location of the offensive’s main blows.
Battle of Kursk: A major 1943 battle on the Eastern Front that ended Germany’s ability to mount large-scale strategic offensives there. Its outcome left the Red Army increasingly able to choose the timing and location of later offensives.
Army Group Centre: A German army group that fought on the central sector of the Eastern Front during World War II. Its destruction was the offensive’s defining military result.
Battle of Minsk: A July 1944 battle in which Soviet forces recaptured Minsk and encircled German troops nearby. The battle marked the collapse of German resistance east of Minsk.
Deep operation: A military doctrine for breaching an enemy front and exploiting deep into its operational rear. Bagration applied this Soviet approach through successive attacks on German defenses and reserves.
Soviet Union in World War II: The Soviet state’s military, political, and economic mobilization against the Axis from 1941 to 1945. Bagration served the Soviet campaign to drive German forces from occupied territory.
Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic: A constituent republic of the Soviet Union that occupied much of present-day Belarus. The offensive recaptured most of the republic from German occupation.
Battle of the Berezina: A series of 1944 actions around the Berezina River during the Soviet advance through Belarus. German forces attempted to retreat across the river as Soviet troops closed in.
Vitebsk–Orsha Offensive: A 1944 Soviet operation that captured Vitebsk and Orsha during the opening phase of Operation Bagration. Its breakthroughs opened the northern approaches to Army Group Centre’s encirclement.
Stavka: The Soviet Union’s supreme high command during World War II. Stavka selected the offensive’s timing, strategic objectives, and participating fronts.
