Operation Ichi-Go

A major Japanese offensive in 1944 that captured territory in central and southern China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It was Japan’s largest campaign in China.

Battle of Central Henan: A 1944 campaign in which Japanese forces seized rail and road corridors in Henan, China. It opened Ichi-Go’s first phase by linking Japanese-held areas across central China.
Imperial Japanese Army: The land warfare branch of Japan’s armed forces from 1871 to 1945. It planned and carried out the offensive to secure territory and transport routes.
China Burma India Theater: The Allied World War II theater encompassing China, Burma, and India. Ichi-Go reshaped the China front within this wider Allied theater.
Yasuji Okamura: A Japanese general who commanded the China Expeditionary Army during much of World War II. He directed the Japanese forces conducting Ichi-Go.
Battle of Changheng: A 1944 battle in which Japanese forces captured Changsha and Hengyang in Hunan, China. It marked the offensive’s southward advance through Hunan.
Tōjō Cabinet: The Japanese government led by Prime Minister Hideki Tōjō from 1941 to 1944. Its leaders approved the campaign amid mounting pressure from Allied advances.
Fourteenth Air Force: A US Army Air Forces unit that conducted operations in China during World War II. The campaign forced American air units to abandon or relocate several Chinese bases.
Shunroku Hata: A Japanese field marshal who commanded the China Expeditionary Army in 1944. His command oversaw the offensive’s major operations in China.
Battle of Guilin–Liuzhou: A 1944 Japanese campaign that captured Guilin and Liuzhou in Guangxi, China. It extended Ichi-Go into Guangxi and threatened Allied airfields.
Hideki Tōjō: A Japanese general and politician who served as prime minister from 1941 to 1944. He backed Ichi-Go as Japan sought to strengthen its position in China.
