Operation Iskra

Operation Iskra was a Soviet offensive in January 1943 that broke the German siege of Leningrad by opening a narrow land corridor to the city.

Siege of Leningrad: A German and Finnish siege of Leningrad from 1941 to 1944 that caused mass civilian deaths and severe shortages. The blockade Iskra breached had isolated the city since September 1941.
Operation Barbarossa: Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union, launched on 22 June 1941. The invasion brought German forces to Leningrad and began the military crisis Iskra sought to reverse.
Road of Life: The ice and water supply route across Lake Ladoga that connected besieged Leningrad with Soviet-held territory. Before Iskra, this hazardous lake route was the city's only dependable link to the Soviet interior.
Workers' Settlement No. 1: A settlement near the Neva where Soviet forces from the Leningrad and Volkhov Fronts linked during Operation Iskra. Its capture on 18 January 1943 marked the physical connection of the two Soviet forces.
Neva River: A river in northwestern Russia flowing from Lake Ladoga through Saint Petersburg into the Gulf of Finland. Soviet forces had to cross its ice-covered waters to attack the German-held southern bank.

Workers' Settlement No. 5: A settlement near Sinyavino that was the scene of fierce fighting during Operation Iskra. Repeated attacks around it illustrate the resistance that slowed the Soviet advance.
Shlisselburg: A town at the outlet of the Neva from Lake Ladoga, captured by Soviet forces during Operation Iskra. Its capture helped clear the southern shore of Lake Ladoga and secure the corridor's eastern end.
Operation Sinyavino: A Soviet offensive in 1942 that attempted to break the blockade of Leningrad but failed. Its costly failure influenced Soviet planning for the more concentrated attack of Iskra.
