Operation Kutuzov

A Soviet offensive launched in July 1943 against German forces in the Orel salient. It helped drive German troops from the salient and relieve pressure on the Soviet forces fighting at Kursk.

Orel salient: A German-held bulge in the Soviet front around the city of Orel during 1941–1943. The salient was the geographic target that Soviet armies attacked from several directions.
Battle of Kursk: A major 1943 Eastern Front battle in which Soviet forces defeated Germany’s offensive and counterattacked. Kutuzov began as the Soviet response to the German attack on the Kursk salient.
Georgy Zhukov: A Soviet marshal who commanded major Red Army operations during the Second World War. Zhukov helped coordinate Soviet strategic planning for the summer campaign.
Belgorod–Kharkiv Offensive Operation: A Soviet offensive in August 1943 that recaptured Belgorod and Kharkiv from German forces. It extended the summer counteroffensive after the Orel salient fell.
