Operation Sonnenblume

Operation Sonnenblume was the German deployment of forces to North Africa in February 1941 to support Italy after British victories in Libya. It established the Afrika Korps as a major force in the North African campaign.

Afrika Korps: The German expeditionary corps sent to North Africa in 1941 to fight alongside Italian forces. The operation’s central military formation began arriving in Libya in February 1941.
Battle of Beda Fomm: A February 1941 battle in which British forces trapped and defeated retreating Italian troops in Libya. The defeat intensified the danger that Italy would lose its remaining Libyan territory.
Siege of Tobruk: The prolonged Axis siege of the Allied-held Libyan port of Tobruk in 1941. The German-led advance soon reached Tobruk but failed to capture its defenders.

Hans von Funck: A German general who served as an armored commander in the North African campaign. His reconnaissance mission helped assess the conditions facing the arriving German troops.
