Operation Uranus

Operation Uranus was the Soviet strategic offensive launched on 19 November 1942 that encircled the German Sixth Army and allied forces at Stalingrad.

Don Front: A Soviet military front that fought north and west of Stalingrad during the battle. Its forces attacked the northern side of the German-held salient.
Georgy Zhukov: A Soviet marshal who helped plan and direct major Red Army operations during World War II. He helped develop the strategic counteroffensive plan that became Operation Uranus.
Friedrich Paulus: A German field marshal who commanded the Sixth Army at Stalingrad. His army became the largest formation trapped by Uranus.
Operation Winter Storm: A German relief offensive launched in December 1942 to reach the encircled forces at Stalingrad. Its failure left the pocket isolated despite a temporary advance toward it.
Southwestern Front: A Soviet military front that conducted major operations on the southern flank of the German Sixth Army. It drove south from the Don region to help close the encirclement.
Aleksandr Vasilevsky: A Soviet marshal and chief of the General Staff during much of World War II. He worked with Zhukov and Stalin to prepare the counteroffensive.
Erich von Manstein: A German field marshal who commanded Army Group Don during the Stalingrad crisis. He led the German effort to relieve the encircled forces.
Operation Koltso: The Soviet January 1943 offensive that reduced and captured the Stalingrad pocket. It completed the destruction of the forces encircled by Uranus.
Stalingrad Front: A Soviet military front responsible for operations east and south of Stalingrad. Its attack from the south joined the northern Soviet pincers.
Joseph Stalin: The leader of the Soviet Union during World War II. He approved the plan and oversaw the strategic decision to launch it.
