Operational art

Operational art is the design and conduct of campaigns that connect tactical actions to strategic objectives. It organizes military forces, time, space, and resources to achieve strategic ends.

Campaign: A series of related military operations conducted to achieve an operational or strategic objective. Operational art gives a campaign coherence by linking its operations to a shared objective.
Levels of war: The strategic, operational, and tactical levels used to organize military activity and decision-making. Operational art occupies the level that connects strategy with tactical action.
Alexander Svechin: A Soviet military theorist whose writings developed the concept of operational art between strategy and tactics. His work gave operational art a systematic place in Soviet military theory.
Operation Overlord: The Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944, opening a western front in German-occupied Europe. Its planning coordinated amphibious, airborne, logistical, and deception efforts toward a strategic aim.
Maneuver warfare: A military approach that seeks advantage by dislocating an opponent through movement, tempo, and disruption. It is a way of fighting that may inform a campaign but is not campaign design itself.
Center of gravity (military strategy): A source of power or strength whose loss can decisively affect an opponent's ability to pursue its aims. Campaign design often focuses effort on the opponent's decisive sources of strength.
Military strategy: The direction of military means to achieve political and strategic objectives. It supplies the ends that operational art translates into campaigns.
Georgii Isserson: A Soviet military theorist known for analyzing deep operations and the changing character of warfare. His theories helped shape the operational level in Soviet doctrine.
Operation Desert Storm: The 1991 U.S.-led military campaign that expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Its air and ground phases illustrate sequencing across a large, coordinated campaign.
Attrition warfare: A strategy of weakening an opponent by progressively destroying its personnel and material. Its focus on cumulative losses differs from operational art's broader design of campaigns.
