Opinion journalism

Opinion journalism presents arguments or personal judgments about public affairs, distinguishing commentary and advocacy from reporting that primarily documents events.

Editorial: An article expressing a publication’s institutional position on a public issue. Editorials are the clearest form of opinion written in a publication’s collective voice.
Argumentation: The practice of giving reasons and evidence to support or challenge a claim. Opinion articles use arguments to move beyond assertion toward justification.
Partisan press: Newspapers aligned with political parties or factions, especially common in early American publishing. Its openly partisan model foreshadowed journalism that argues for political positions.
Objective journalism: A journalistic ideal emphasizing factual accuracy, impartial presentation, and separation from personal judgment. It supplies the professional ideal against which opinion journalism is often distinguished.
Agenda-setting theory: A theory that media influence which issues audiences consider important by emphasizing some topics over others. Prominent commentary can elevate issues even when it does not change readers’ positions.
Op-ed: A signed opinion article published outside a newspaper’s editorial board pages. Op-eds give individual writers a prominent venue for argued positions.
Rhetoric: The study and practice of persuasive communication. Rhetorical choices shape how opinion journalism appeals to evidence, values, and emotion.
Penny press: Nineteenth-century inexpensive newspapers that expanded circulation among urban mass audiences. Mass readership widened the audience and commercial stakes for newspaper commentary.
Advocacy journalism: Journalism that openly advances a particular cause or perspective. Its explicit commitment to a cause can overlap with, but is not identical to, opinion writing.
Public sphere: A social space where people discuss matters of common concern and form public opinion. Opinion pages provide institutions for mediated public debate.
