Opium Wars

The Opium Wars were two nineteenth-century conflicts in which Britain, and later Britain and France, fought Qing China. They ended with treaties that expanded foreign access, trade privileges, and legal immunities in China.

Canton System: The Qing system that restricted most foreign trade to the port of Canton and regulated foreign merchants. Its limits on foreign commerce helped turn British demands for wider access into a diplomatic crisis.
First Opium War: The 1839–1842 war between Britain and Qing China over trade, diplomacy, and the opium trade. It was the first conflict and produced the Treaty of Nanjing.
Unequal treaties: Treaties imposed on China by foreign powers that granted privileges without equivalent concessions. The Opium War settlements became foundational examples of this wider treaty system.
Hong Kong: A territory on China's southern coast that became a British colony and later a special administrative region of China. The Treaty of Nanjing ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain, while the 1860 settlement added Kowloon.
First Sino-Japanese War: The 1894–1895 war between Qing China and Japan over influence in Korea. Unlike the Opium Wars, it was fought against a rapidly modernizing Asian rival over regional dominance.
East India Company: A British chartered company that governed territories and conducted trade in Asia. It organized the opium trade from India that helped finance British purchases of Chinese goods.
Second Opium War: The 1856–1860 conflict in which Britain and France fought Qing China to widen treaty privileges. It renewed the conflict after earlier treaties failed to satisfy British and French demands.
Treaty ports: Chinese ports opened by treaty to foreign trade, residence, and consular activity. The treaties compelled China to open ports beyond the tightly controlled Canton trade.
Taiping Rebellion: A massive civil war in Qing China from 1850 to 1864 led by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. It overlapped the Second Opium War and further weakened the Qing state.
Sino-French War: The 1884–1885 conflict between France and Qing China over French expansion in Vietnam. It was a later Franco-Qing war, distinct from France's participation in the Second Opium War.
