Opium

Opium is the dried latex of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), containing morphine, codeine, and other alkaloids. It has been used as an analgesic and intoxicant.

Morphine: A potent opioid alkaloid and analgesic found naturally in opium. It is opium’s principal analgesic alkaloid and a major source of its effects.
Papaver somniferum: A poppy species cultivated for its seeds and the opium latex of its unripe capsules. Its seed capsules are cut to collect the latex that dries into opium.
Analgesia: The reduction or absence of pain without loss of consciousness. Opium has been used to relieve pain because its alkaloids act on opioid pathways.
Heroin: A semisynthetic opioid made from morphine and used as a medicine or illicit drug. Unlike raw opium, heroin is a chemically modified, more potent opioid.
Codeine: An opioid alkaloid found in opium and used chiefly to treat pain and cough. It is another naturally occurring opium alkaloid, with weaker analgesic effects than morphine.
Ancient Egyptian medicine: Medical practices documented in ancient Egypt, including remedies recorded on papyri. The Ebers Papyrus records preparations involving opium poppy.
Laudanum: An alcoholic tincture of opium formerly used as a medicine. It was a widely used liquid preparation that delivered opium by mouth.
Fentanyl: A synthetic opioid used medically for severe pain and also produced illicitly. It is a laboratory-made opioid rather than an alkaloid extracted from poppy latex.
Opioid receptor: A cell-surface receptor activated by endogenous opioid peptides and opioid drugs. Morphine and related opium alkaloids produce their effects by activating these receptors.
Silk Road: A network of trade routes that connected parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe across centuries. Trade along these routes helped carry opium and poppy cultivation across regions.
