Optical isolator

An optical isolator transmits light preferentially in one direction and suppresses reverse-propagating light. Its nonreciprocal behavior protects lasers and other optical sources from back reflections.

Faraday effect: A magnetic field rotates the polarization plane of light passing through a material. This nonreciprocal rotation makes reverse-traveling light turn farther from the forward polarization.
Laser diode: A semiconductor device that emits coherent light through stimulated emission. Back reflections can destabilize its output, making isolation especially useful.
Polarization: The orientation and evolution of the electric-field oscillations in an electromagnetic wave. Most conventional isolators route light by selecting and rotating polarization states.
Optical circulator: A nonreciprocal device that routes light sequentially among multiple optical ports. A circulator redirects reverse light to another port, while an isolator typically rejects it.
Faraday rotator: An optical component that uses the Faraday effect to rotate light polarization. It supplies the isolator’s fixed polarization rotation.
External-cavity laser: A laser whose resonator includes an optical cavity outside its gain medium. Its extended cavity can be sensitive to light reflected from downstream optics.
Linear polarization: A polarization state in which the electric field oscillates along a fixed direction. The input and output polarizers select linear states around the Faraday rotator.
Optical attenuator: A device that reduces optical power without requiring a preferred propagation direction. An attenuator lowers power in both directions rather than selectively blocking reverse light.
Polarizer: An optical element that transmits selected polarization states and attenuates others. Polarizers convert the rotator’s direction-dependent polarization into forward passage and reverse rejection.
Fiber-optic communication: The transmission of information as light through optical fibers. Isolators limit reflections that can impair transmitters and optical amplifiers.
