Optical mixing

Optical mixing is the perception of colors blending when small areas of different colors are viewed together. The colors remain physically separate; their combined appearance arises in visual perception.

Spatial frequency: The rate at which a pattern repeats across space, commonly measured in cycles per degree of vision. Fine color patterns blend when their spatial frequency exceeds the eye’s resolving ability.
Color constancy: The tendency to perceive an object’s color as stable despite changes in illumination. It shows that perceived color depends on visual interpretation, not solely on incoming wavelengths.
Pointillism: A painting technique that builds images from distinct dots of unmixed color. Pointillist paintings use small marks intended to blend into broader colors at viewing distance.
Michel Eugène Chevreul: A French chemist whose work on color contrast influenced nineteenth-century artists and designers. Chevreul’s color theories helped shape artistic attention to how neighboring colors appear together.
Visual acuity: The ability to resolve fine spatial detail, often measured by distinguishing closely spaced features. Reduced acuity makes separate colored marks merge at shorter viewing distances.
Simultaneous contrast: A change in a color’s appearance caused by the colors surrounding it. Surrounding colors can alter appearance even when no small-scale blending occurs.
Divisionism: A painting method that separates color into deliberate strokes or dots based on color theory. Divisionist painters applied spatially separated color to create luminous blended effects.
Ogden Rood: An American physicist whose 1879 book Modern Chromatics discussed color vision and color mixing. Rood explained how small adjacent color elements could combine perceptually at a distance.
Lateral inhibition: A neural process in which active sensory cells reduce the activity of neighboring cells. Retinal interactions shape perceived edges and contrast within patterns of neighboring colors.
Color assimilation: A visual effect in which a color shifts toward the color of its immediate surroundings. Assimilation can accompany optical mixing, but describes a local shift rather than blended appearance.
