Optical rotation

Optical rotation is the change in orientation of plane-polarized light as it passes through an optically active material. Its measured magnitude depends on the material and measurement conditions, including path length, concentration, wavelength, and temperature.

Circular birefringence: A difference in refractive index for left- and right-circularly polarized light. The unequal propagation speeds of circular components produce the rotation of linear polarization.
Linear polarization: A state of light in which the electric field oscillates along a fixed transverse direction. Optical rotation is defined as a change in this polarization direction.
Enantiomeric excess: A measure of how much one enantiomer exceeds the other in a mixture. Rotation can estimate enantiomeric excess when the pure-enantiomer response is known and conditions are controlled.
Optical rotatory dispersion: The variation of optical rotation with the wavelength of light. It extends a single-angle measurement into a wavelength-dependent signature of molecular structure.
Optical activity: The ability of a material to rotate the plane of linearly polarized light. Optical rotation is the measured manifestation of this material property.
Chirality: The property of an object that makes it non-superimposable on its mirror image. Chiral molecules commonly produce optical activity because they interact differently with opposite circular polarizations.
Saccharimetry: The measurement of sugar concentration by observing the rotation of polarized light. Sugar solutions provide a classic application of optical rotation in quality control.
Molar rotation: A concentration-normalized optical rotation expressed using a substance's molar concentration. It is related to specific rotation but uses a different concentration convention.
Specific rotation: A normalized measure of optical rotation for a specified wavelength, temperature, and solvent. It allows measurements to be compared after accounting for path length and concentration.
Wavelength: The spatial period of a wave, measured as the distance between corresponding points in successive cycles. Optical rotation varies with wavelength, so measurements specify the light color used.
