Optical telescope

An instrument that collects and focuses visible light to magnify distant objects or form images, especially of astronomical sources.

Objective (optics): The lens or mirror in an optical instrument that gathers light and forms the primary image. The objective sets how much light the telescope collects and where its image forms.
Visible spectrum: The range of electromagnetic wavelengths detectable by human vision. An optical telescope is designed to collect light in this part of the spectrum.
Refracting telescope: An optical telescope that uses lenses as its primary light-gathering element. It forms images by refraction, unlike the mirrors used in reflecting telescopes.
Astronomical imaging: The recording of images of celestial objects using instruments sensitive to electromagnetic radiation. Optical telescopes produce images used to measure and compare astronomical sources.
Hans Lippershey: A Dutch spectacle maker associated with the first recorded patent application for a telescope in 1608. His application marks the earliest documented appearance of the instrument.
Aperture (optics): The effective diameter of an optical system through which light enters. A telescope’s aperture controls light collection and limits its finest resolvable detail.
Geometrical optics: The model of light as rays traveling and refracting or reflecting at surfaces. It describes how telescope lenses and mirrors form images.
Reflecting telescope: An optical telescope that uses mirrors as its primary light-gathering element. Its mirror-based design avoids chromatic aberration in the main objective.
Astrophotography: The practice of photographing celestial objects and events. Long exposures with optical telescopes reveal sources too faint for direct viewing.
Galileo Galilei: An Italian astronomer and physicist who made telescopic observations that changed astronomy. His early observations demonstrated the telescope’s power to investigate the heavens.
