Orchestration

Orchestration is the arrangement of musical parts among instruments or voices in an ensemble. It shapes a composition’s color, balance, texture, and expressive character.

Timbre: Timbre is the quality of a sound that distinguishes it from other sounds with the same pitch and loudness. Instrumental timbre gives orchestration its palette of contrasting and blended colors.
Orchestra: An orchestra is a large ensemble of musicians organized into instrumental sections and led by a conductor. Orchestration assigns music to the sections and players of an ensemble.
Orchestral arrangement: An orchestral arrangement adapts existing music for performance by an orchestra. Arrangers redistribute source material among orchestral instruments.
Hector Berlioz: Hector Berlioz was a French composer and conductor known for works including the Symphonie fantastique. His Treatise on Instrumentation codified practical knowledge of orchestral instruments.
