Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail was a nineteenth-century emigrant route from the Missouri River region to Oregon’s Willamette Valley, traveled chiefly by wagon trains. It helped drive migration and settlement across the continent.

Independence, Missouri: A Missouri city that became a major outfitting and departure point for emigrants heading west. Many wagon parties began their journey here after gathering supplies.
Astoria Expedition: An 1810–1812 American overland and sea expedition to establish a fur-trading settlement at Astoria, Oregon. Its overland party helped publicize a route across the continent to the Pacific Northwest.
Ezra Meeker: An Oregon pioneer and later advocate who retraced and commemorated the Oregon Trail in the early twentieth century. His preservation campaign made surviving trail landmarks a public cause.
Oregon Country: A large Pacific Northwest region claimed by multiple powers before the United States and Britain settled their boundary dispute. The trail carried settlers into this contested region, whose sovereignty shaped migration policy.
Barlow Road: A wagon road opened in 1846 across the south side of Mount Hood as an alternative to the Columbia River passage. It let emigrants reach the Willamette Valley without navigating the Columbia River’s dangerous rapids.
South Pass: A broad, high-elevation passage through Wyoming’s Rocky Mountains. Its gradual ascent offered wagon trains a practical crossing of the Rockies.
Robert Stuart: A Scottish-born fur trader who led an 1812 journey from Astoria to the United States via South Pass. His party’s return route established South Pass as a viable wagon-road corridor.
Jesse Applegate: An Oregon pioneer who helped lead an 1846 wagon route from the trail’s southern Oregon branch to the Willamette Valley. The Applegate Trail offered emigrants an alternative to the Columbia River passage.
Oregon Donation Land Act: A United States law enacted in 1850 granting land in Oregon Territory to eligible white settlers. It rewarded migration along the trail while excluding Indigenous people and most nonwhite settlers.
Lolo Pass: A mountain pass through the Bitterroot Range, used by some emigrants on the Oregon Trail’s northern route. Its difficult crossing shows how route choices varied across the trail’s western reaches.
