Organ system

An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform major functions in an organism. Its organs coordinate their activities while retaining distinct structures and roles.

Organ: A body structure composed of multiple tissue types that performs one or more functions. Organs are the cooperating units that make up an organ system.
Circulatory system: The body system that moves blood, gases, nutrients, hormones, and wastes through the cardiovascular network. Its heart and blood vessels distribute materials across the body.
Negative feedback: A control process in which a change triggers responses that oppose that change. It stabilizes conditions regulated by interacting organ systems.
Open circulatory system: A transport system in which circulatory fluid leaves vessels and directly bathes tissues in body cavities. It contrasts with the closed vessel network found in humans and many other animals.
Multisystem disease: A disease that affects multiple organ systems, either directly or through interactions among them. It shows how illness can cross boundaries between systems.
Tissue: A group of similar cells and associated material organized to perform a function. Tissues form organs, linking cellular structures to system-level functions.
Respiratory system: The organs and structures that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and its environment. Its lungs and airways supply oxygen used by other systems.
Neuroendocrine integration: The coordination of nervous and hormonal signaling in the regulation of body functions. These signaling pathways link rapid commands with sustained system-wide regulation.
Closed circulatory system: A transport system in which blood remains within vessels as it circulates through the body. It is the organizational pattern of the human cardiovascular system.
Systems biology: An approach to biology that studies interacting components as integrated networks rather than in isolation. It extends organ-system thinking to interactions spanning molecules, cells, and organisms.
