Organochlorine chemistry

Organochlorine chemistry studies the preparation, properties, reactions, and uses of organic compounds containing carbon–chlorine bonds. It includes both naturally occurring and synthetic compounds.

Nucleophilic substitution: A reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a leaving group bonded to an electrophilic atom. Many alkyl chlorides undergo substitution when nucleophiles displace chloride.
Alkyl halide: An organic compound in which a halogen is bonded to an aliphatic carbon atom. Alkyl chlorides are one major structural class studied in organochlorine chemistry.
Polyvinyl chloride: A thermoplastic polymer whose repeating units contain carbon–chlorine bonds. PVC is the largest-volume commercial material built from organochlorine monomers.
DDT: A persistent organochlorine insecticide once used extensively in agriculture and disease-vector control. DDT became a defining case in debates over pesticide benefits, persistence, and ecological harm.
Jean-Baptiste Dumas: A French chemist who studied substitution reactions and developed an early theory of organic structure. His work on chlorination helped establish that chlorine could replace hydrogen in organic compounds.
Elimination reaction: A reaction that removes atoms or groups from adjacent atoms, often forming a multiple bond. Alkyl chlorides can lose hydrogen chloride to form alkenes.
Aryl halide: An organic compound with a halogen directly bonded to an aromatic ring. Aryl chlorides differ from alkyl chlorides in their characteristic reaction pathways.
Chloroform: A volatile chlorinated solvent with formula CHCl₃, historically used as an anesthetic. Its changing uses show how toxicity and regulation reshape organochlorine applications.
Polychlorinated biphenyl: One of a family of 209 chlorinated biphenyl compounds formerly used in electrical equipment and other products. PCBs show how industrial organochlorines can persist and accumulate in ecosystems.
Justus von Liebig: A German chemist whose work helped establish modern organic and agricultural chemistry. His dispute with Dumas over chlorinated compounds exposed competing theories of chemical constitution.
