Organosilicon chemistry

Organosilicon chemistry studies compounds with at least one silicon–carbon bond, including how they are made, structured, and transformed.

Silicon–carbon bond: A covalent bond between silicon and carbon, central to organosilicon compounds. Its polarity and strength shape the structures and reactions studied in this field.
Silylation: A reaction that installs a silyl group on a molecule. Silylation introduces silicon substituents used in synthesis, protection, and functionalization.
Silicone: A polymer containing a backbone of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms with organic side groups. Silicones are prominent materials whose properties depend on organosilicon substituents.
Organoboron chemistry: The chemistry of compounds containing carbon–boron bonds. Organoboron reagents provide a useful alternative for carbon–carbon bond formation.
Friedel–Crafts reaction: An electrophilic aromatic substitution that installs alkyl or acyl groups on aromatic rings. Early organosilicon synthesis adapted classical electrophilic methods to make arylsilicon compounds.
Organosilane: A compound containing a silicon atom bonded to one or more organic groups. Organosilanes are a broad, synthetically versatile family built around Si–C bonds.
Brook rearrangement: A rearrangement in which a silyl group migrates from carbon to oxygen within a molecule. It illustrates how silicon substituents can migrate through anionic intermediates.
Silane coupling agent: A molecule that bonds inorganic surfaces to organic materials through reactive silane groups. These agents use silicon chemistry to join glass, minerals, and polymers.
Organotin chemistry: The chemistry of compounds containing tin–carbon bonds. Organotin reagents share group 14 bonding patterns but raise distinct toxicity concerns.
Charles Friedel: A French chemist whose work with James Crafts helped establish Friedel–Crafts chemistry. Friedel’s investigations included early preparations of organosilicon compounds.
