Organosulfur chemistry

Organosulfur chemistry studies organic compounds containing sulfur, including their structures, properties, synthesis, and reactions. Sulfur’s variable oxidation states and bonding make these compounds unusually diverse.

Sulfur: A chemical element with atomic number 16 that forms compounds across several oxidation states. Its multiple valence states underpin the structural variety of organosulfur compounds.
Nucleophilic substitution: A reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a leaving group at an electrophilic center. Thiolate ions displace leaving groups efficiently to form carbon–sulfur bonds.
Penicillin: A class of β-lactam antibiotics containing a sulfur-bearing thiazolidine ring. Its sulfur-containing core is part of a structure that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis.
Organoselenium chemistry: The chemistry of organic compounds containing selenium. Selenium’s greater size and polarizability alter reactivity relative to sulfur analogues.
Thiols: Organic compounds containing a sulfhydryl group, –SH, bonded to carbon. They are sulfur analogues of alcohols and common precursors to other sulfur functional groups.
Sulfur oxidation: The conversion of sulfur compounds to products in which sulfur has a higher oxidation state. Controlled oxidation converts sulfides into sulfoxides or sulfones.
Sulfur mustard: A vesicant chemical warfare agent, bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide. Its reactive chloroethyl groups show how organosulfur compounds can cause severe biological injury.
Organotellurium chemistry: The chemistry of organic compounds containing tellurium. Tellurium compounds extend chalcogen chemistry to a heavier element with distinct bonding and stability.
Sulfides: Compounds in which sulfur is bonded to two carbon groups, with the general structure R–S–R′. Their nucleophilic sulfur atom supports alkylation and oxidation reactions.
Sulfur reduction: The conversion of sulfur compounds to products in which sulfur has a lower oxidation state. Reduction provides routes from oxidized sulfur groups to sulfides and other lower-valent products.
