Orhan

Orhan was the second Ottoman ruler, reigning from about 1324 to 1362. He expanded Ottoman power across northwestern Anatolia and established its first lasting foothold in Europe.

Ottoman Empire: A state founded by the Ottoman dynasty that ruled parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa for more than six centuries. Orhan’s campaigns and rule laid foundations for the empire that later bore his dynasty’s name.

Murad I: An Ottoman sultan who succeeded Orhan and continued expansion in the Balkans. Orhan’s son inherited the state and European foothold that shaped his campaigns.
Ottoman expansion into Europe: The Ottoman state’s extension of its rule from Anatolia into southeastern Europe. Orhan’s acquisition of a foothold at Gallipoli began the dynasty’s lasting expansion into Europe.
Byzantine Empire: The medieval Greek-speaking empire centered on Constantinople, continuing the eastern Roman state. Byzantine weakness and political conflicts created openings for Orhan’s expansion and alliances.
