Oriental studies

Oriental studies is the scholarly study of Asian and Middle Eastern languages, histories, religions, and cultures, especially within older European academic traditions. Its scope and terminology reflect changing scholarly methods and unequal histories of representation.

Edward Said: Edward Said was a Palestinian American literary scholar whose 1978 book Orientalism analyzed Western representations of the East. His critique made the field’s power relations central to debates about its history.
Asian studies: Asian studies is an interdisciplinary study of the societies, histories, and cultures of Asia. Its regional framing often replaces the older East–West categories associated with Oriental studies.
Philology: Philology is the study of language through historical texts, linguistic change, and textual interpretation. Textual philology was a core method for studying Asian and Middle Eastern traditions.
Colonialism: Colonialism is the control of one people or territory by another, often through settlement and extraction. Colonial rule provided institutions and unequal relationships within which much early Oriental scholarship operated.
Orientalism: Orientalism is Edward Said’s analysis of Western knowledge and representation of the Orient as bound up with imperial power. Said’s critical concept shares the field’s name but challenges its claims to neutral authority.
Middle Eastern studies: Middle Eastern studies is an interdisciplinary field focused on the societies and histories of the Middle East. It is one regional specialization once grouped within broad Orientalist institutions.
Comparative linguistics: Comparative linguistics studies relationships among languages by comparing their structures and histories. Language comparison helped scholars classify and connect languages across the field’s regions.
Ethnography: Ethnography is the systematic description and interpretation of a people’s social life and culture. Ethnographic work extended scholarly inquiry beyond texts into living societies.
Royal Asiatic Society: The Royal Asiatic Society is a British learned society founded in 1823 to advance research on Asia. It exemplifies the scholarly institutions through which British Oriental studies developed.
Postcolonial studies: Postcolonial studies examines the cultural, political, and historical effects of colonialism and its aftermath. It analyzes how colonial power shaped the production of knowledge about Asian and Middle Eastern societies.
