Origin of birds

The evolutionary history through which birds arose from theropod dinosaurs, involving changes in feathers, skeletons, flight, and reproduction.

Theropod: A diverse group of mostly carnivorous dinosaurs that includes birds and their closest extinct relatives. Birds emerged within theropods, rather than from a separate dinosaur lineage.
Feather evolution: The evolutionary diversification of feathers from simple filaments into structures with increasingly complex forms. Feathers appeared in non-avian dinosaurs before their later roles in flight.
Anchiornis: A small feathered theropod from the Late Jurassic of China, known for preserved plumage on all four limbs. Its extensive feathers show that elaborate plumage preceded the earliest widely accepted birds.

Tree-down theory: A hypothesis that powered flight evolved from arboreal ancestors gliding or leaping between elevated perches. It proposes an alternative ecological route from feathered dinosaurs to flight.
