Within Our Gates : A 1920 silent film by Oscar Micheaux about a Black woman confronting racial violence and educational inequality. Its response to D. W. Griffith’s racist The Birth of a Nation makes Micheaux’s counter-cinema especially clear.
The Conquest: The Story of a Negro Pioneer : Oscar Micheaux’s 1913 novel, based on his experiences as a homesteader in South Dakota. Its autobiographical material later became the basis for The Exile.
