Osman I

Osman I was the founder of the Ottoman dynasty and its first ruler, leading a small principality in northwestern Anatolia around the turn of the 14th century.

Anatolian beyliks: Turkic principalities that emerged in Anatolia after the decline of Seljuk authority. Osman’s principality was one of these competing states.
Orhan: The second Ottoman ruler, who succeeded Osman and expanded the principality into a state. Osman’s son consolidated the lands and institutions inherited from his father.
Ghazi: A Muslim frontier warrior associated with armed struggle against non-Muslim powers. Ottoman traditions describe Osman’s following through the frontier-warrior ideal.
Ottoman historiography: The writing and interpretation of Ottoman history across successive periods. Later chroniclers supplied much of the narrative about Osman’s life and origins.
Söğüt: A town in northwestern Anatolia associated with the early Ottoman dynasty. Ottoman tradition places Osman’s base and early rule at Söğüt.
Ertuğrul: A figure in Ottoman tradition presented as Osman’s father and leader of the Kayı tribe. Accounts of Osman’s ancestry often begin with this partly legendary predecessor.
Akıncı: A light cavalry raider used by the Ottoman state for frontier raids and reconnaissance. The raiding practices associated with later akıncı units illuminate the frontier setting of Osman’s campaigns.
Aşıkpaşazade: A 15th-century Ottoman chronicler whose work recounts the dynasty’s early history. His account preserves influential stories about Osman, written generations after his lifetime.
Bithynia: A historical region of northwestern Anatolia bordering the Sea of Marmara. Osman’s frontier principality expanded into Byzantine-held Bithynia.
Osman I's wife Malhun Hatun: A woman in Ottoman tradition associated with Osman I and the early dynasty. Her place in dynastic accounts connects Osman’s household to the succession narrative.
