Osteology

Osteology is the study of bones, including their structure, development, and function. It examines bones as living tissues and as parts of skeletal systems.

Bone: Bone is a mineralized connective tissue that forms the skeleton of vertebrates. Osteology centers on this tissue and its roles in support, protection, and movement.
Bone remodeling: Bone remodeling is the lifelong replacement of old bone tissue with newly formed tissue. It maintains bone strength while regulating mineral stores.
Forensic anthropology: Forensic anthropology applies the analysis of human remains to legal investigations. Bone measurements and features can help establish identity and circumstances of death.
Andreas Vesalius: Andreas Vesalius was a sixteenth-century physician whose anatomical work transformed the study of the human body. His anatomical illustrations helped establish direct observation as a basis for skeletal study.
Arthrology: Arthrology is the study of joints and their structure, classification, and function. It focuses on articulations, while osteology focuses on bones themselves.
Compact bone: Compact bone is dense bone tissue organized into closely packed structural units called osteons. It forms much of the hard outer layer examined in bone structure.
Osteoblast: An osteoblast is a bone-forming cell that produces and mineralizes bone matrix. Osteoblasts build the matrix that gives bones their structure.
Paleopathology: Paleopathology is the study of disease in ancient human and animal populations. Skeletal lesions preserve evidence of disease in past populations.
William Cheselden: William Cheselden was an English surgeon and anatomist known for influential anatomical publications. His illustrated anatomy included detailed depictions of the human skeleton.
Myology: Myology is the study of muscles and their structure and function. Muscle study complements bone study but centers on contractile tissues.
