Oswald of Northumbria

Oswald was a seventh-century king of Bernicia and Northumbria who restored his dynasty, expanded his rule across northern England, and promoted Christianity. He was killed in battle in 642 and venerated as a saint.

Æthelfrith: A king of Bernicia and Deira whose rule helped establish Northumbrian power before his death in 616. Oswald was Æthelfrith’s son and inherited a claim to the kingdoms his father had ruled.
Battle of Heavenfield: A battle near Hexham in 634 in which Oswald defeated Cadwallon and secured the Northumbrian throne. This victory ended Cadwallon’s occupation and enabled Oswald to reclaim his father’s kingdom.
Battle of Maserfield: A battle fought in 642 in which Penda of Mercia defeated and killed Oswald. Oswald’s death there turned a political defeat into the central event of his saintly story.

Iona Abbey: A monastery founded on the Scottish island of Iona by the Irish missionary Columba in 563. Oswald spent years in exile among the Gaelic Christians associated with Iona.
Aidan of Lindisfarne: An Irish monk and bishop who founded the monastery of Lindisfarne and evangelized Northumbria. Oswald invited Aidan to Northumbria and supported his mission among the English.
