Knowra Othering Othering Othering is the process of portraying people as fundamentally different from a group treated as normal or dominant. It can justify exclusion, unequal treatment, or control.
In-group and out-group : An in-group is a group someone identifies with; an out-group is one they see as outside it. Othering sharpens this distinction by presenting the out-group as fundamentally unlike the in-group.
Discrimination : Unequal treatment of people based on characteristics such as race, sex, religion, or disability. Othering can convert claims of difference into unequal treatment.
Edward Said : A Palestinian American literary scholar whose book Orientalism analyzed Western representations of the East. Said showed how representations of cultural difference can reinforce political power.
Multiculturalism : A political and social approach that recognizes and accommodates cultural plurality within a society. Unlike othering, multiculturalism can recognize group differences without casting one group as abnormal.
Social identity theory : A theory explaining how group memberships shape identity, intergroup comparison, and behavior. It explains how group identification and comparison can support distinctions that othering makes hierarchical.
Social exclusion : The process by which people are prevented from participating fully in social, economic, or political life. Exclusion is one consequence of defining a group as outside the social norm.
Simone de Beauvoir : A French philosopher and writer whose work examined women’s social subordination and freedom. In The Second Sex, she described woman as positioned as the Other in relation to man.
Cultural relativism : The approach of interpreting beliefs and practices within their own cultural contexts rather than by external standards. It offers a method for understanding cultural difference without automatically ranking groups.
Stereotype : A generalized belief about the characteristics of members of a social group. Stereotypes supply simplified traits used to portray an out-group as essentially different.
Racialization : The process of assigning racial meaning to people, practices, or social relationships. Othering can racialize groups by treating socially assigned differences as fundamental.
