Ottawa

Ottawa is Canada’s capital city, located in southeastern Ontario on the Ottawa River across from Gatineau, Quebec.

Ottawa River: A major river in eastern Canada that forms part of the Ontario–Quebec boundary. The river gives Ottawa its name and separates it from Gatineau.
Bytown: The settlement founded near the Rideau Canal construction site that became Ottawa. Ottawa was called Bytown before receiving city status and its present name.
Parliament Hill: The Ottawa site of Canada’s Parliament buildings and federal legislature. It is the most visible centre of national political life in the capital.
Toronto: Ontario’s capital and Canada’s largest city by population. Toronto is Ontario’s largest metropolis, while Ottawa holds Canada’s federal institutions.
Gatineau: A city in western Quebec, across the Ottawa River from Ottawa. Together, Gatineau and Ottawa form the core of the National Capital Region.
Rideau Canal construction: The early nineteenth-century project that built a military canal between Ottawa and Kingston. The canal’s construction brought workers and settlement to the site of Bytown.
Supreme Court of Canada: Canada’s highest court, which hears appeals on matters of law and constitutional importance. Its Ottawa location places the country’s top court near Parliament and federal agencies.
Montreal: Quebec’s largest city, located on the Island of Montreal in the St. Lawrence River. Montreal is the nearby French-speaking metropolis; Ottawa is the national capital on the provincial border.
National Capital Region: The federal capital area spanning parts of Ontario and Quebec around Ottawa and Gatineau. Ottawa’s metropolitan and federal functions extend across the provincial boundary.
Queen Victoria: Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901 and monarch during Canada’s confederation era. She selected Ottawa as the Province of Canada’s capital in 1857.
