Otto Rank

Otto Rank (1884–1939) was an Austrian psychoanalyst and writer whose theories connected birth trauma, separation, creativity, and artistic expression.

Sigmund Freud: Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis. Rank became a close associate of Freud and served as secretary of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society.
Birth trauma: Birth trauma is the proposed psychological impact of the infant’s separation from the womb during birth. Rank made this separation the prototype for later anxiety and experiences of loss.
Psychoanalysis: Psychoanalysis is a theory and method of treating psychological distress through attention to unconscious processes. Rank developed his theories inside Freud’s psychoanalytic movement before breaking with its orthodoxy.
Psychology of art: The psychology of art studies the mental processes involved in creating, experiencing, and interpreting art. Rank analyzed artistic creation as an expression of the artist’s struggle for individuality.
The Development of Psychoanalysis: The Development of Psychoanalysis is a 1924 book by Otto Rank and Sándor Ferenczi advocating changes to analytic technique. Its proposals about therapeutic practice contributed to Rank’s rupture with Freud’s circle.
Sándor Ferenczi: Sándor Ferenczi was a Hungarian psychoanalyst known for experimental clinical techniques and influential theories of trauma. Ferenczi and Rank jointly challenged rigid analytic practice in a 1924 publication.
Separation anxiety: Separation anxiety is distress arising from actual or anticipated separation from an attachment figure. Rank interpreted later fears of separation as repetitions of the original birth experience.
Unconscious mind: The unconscious mind comprises mental processes that influence thought and behavior without entering awareness. Rank used psychoanalytic assumptions about unconscious conflict to interpret birth-related anxiety.
The Artist: The Artist is a 1907 study by Otto Rank examining artists and artistic creation through psychoanalysis. This early book established Rank’s sustained interest in the psychology of art.
Self psychology: Self psychology is a psychoanalytic approach that studies the development and maintenance of a cohesive self. Rank’s focus on agency and individuation anticipated concerns later central to theories of the self.
