Otto the Great

Otto I ruled East Francia from 936 and became emperor in 962, establishing a durable link between the German kingship and imperial title.

Henry the Fowler: King of East Francia from 919 to 936 and Otto I’s father. His death in 936 opened the succession that Otto inherited.
Ottonian dynasty: A dynasty that ruled the East Frankish kingdom and the empire from 919 to 1024. Otto’s family succession carried his political settlement beyond his own reign.

Carolingian Empire: The empire built by Charlemagne and his successors across much of western and central Europe. Otto’s empire revived the western imperial title without recreating Carolingian territorial unity.
