Ottoman Algeria

Ottoman Algeria was the North African territory governed from Algiers under Ottoman sovereignty from the sixteenth century until France invaded in 1830.

Algiers Regency: The Ottoman-governed polity centered on Algiers, often used as a name for Ottoman Algeria. Its institutions and political status changed as local rulers gained autonomy from Istanbul.
Oruç Reis: A corsair and Ottoman-backed ruler who helped establish Ottoman power in Algiers before his death in 1518. His rule laid the groundwork for Ottoman control, which his brother strengthened.
Salim al-Tumi: The local ruler of Algiers who sought Spanish assistance before Oruç Reis seized the city in 1516. His rule preceded the establishment of Ottoman-backed government in Algiers.
Spanish Algeria: A network of Spanish-held coastal fortresses in North Africa, including Oran and the Peñón of Algiers, during the sixteenth century. Spanish enclaves challenged the Ottoman-backed rulers’ control of the Algerian coast.
Algerian War of Independence: The 1954–1962 war in which Algerian nationalists fought to end French colonial rule and establish an independent state. It concluded the colonial period that followed the French overthrow of Ottoman Algeria.
Dey of Algiers: The elected ruler who governed Algiers and its dependent territories from 1671 until the French conquest. The deys became the territory’s principal rulers after the pashas lost effective authority.
Hayreddin Barbarossa: An Ottoman admiral and corsair who secured Algiers for the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century. He placed Algiers under Ottoman sovereignty and tied its defense to imperial power.
Hassan Pasha: An Ottoman governor of Algiers and son of Hayreddin Barbarossa who held office in the sixteenth century. His successive appointments illustrate the early governors’ direct connections to the Ottoman court.
Spanish Oran: The city of Oran under Spanish rule from 1509 to 1708 and again from 1732 to 1792. Oran remained a major Spanish foothold within the region claimed by Ottoman Algeria.
French Algeria: The French colonial regime in Algeria from the conquest beginning in 1830 until independence in 1962. It replaced Ottoman sovereignty with a colonial system that reshaped government and society.
