Ottoman conquest of the Balkans

The gradual expansion of Ottoman rule across southeastern Europe, beginning in the fourteenth century and incorporating Balkan territories through warfare, alliances, settlement, and administration.

Battle of Maritsa: A 1371 Ottoman victory over Serbian forces near the Maritsa River in present-day Greece. It weakened regional resistance and opened routes for Ottoman influence in the southern Balkans.
Ottoman Empire: A state founded in Anatolia that ruled territories across southeastern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa from the late thirteenth century to 1922. Its emergence as a regional power made sustained Balkan expansion possible.
Fall of Constantinople: The Ottoman capture of Constantinople on 29 May 1453, ending the Byzantine Empire. It secured the imperial capital and strengthened Ottoman authority across the Balkans.
Ottoman conquest of Edirne: The Ottoman capture of Edirne in the fourteenth century, after which it became a major imperial capital. Edirne served as a European base for further expansion into the Balkans.
Battle of Kosovo: A 1389 battle between Ottoman forces and a coalition led by Serbian prince Lazar Hrebeljanović. Its outcome accelerated Ottoman dominance over Serbian lands, though it did not end Serbian resistance.

Byzantine Empire: The medieval eastern Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople until its conquest by the Ottomans in 1453. Its weakening frontier and internal conflicts gave Ottoman forces opportunities in Thrace and beyond.
