Ottoman Hungary

Ottoman Hungary was the portion of the medieval Hungarian kingdom governed directly by the Ottoman Empire, chiefly from the mid-sixteenth century until the late seventeenth century.

Budin Eyalet: An Ottoman province centered on Buda, governing much of central Hungary from 1541 to 1686. It was the principal administrative unit of Ottoman Hungary.
Battle of Mohács: A 1526 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Kingdom of Hungary, killing King Louis II. The defeat opened a succession crisis and accelerated Ottoman expansion into Hungary.
Suleiman the Magnificent: Ottoman sultan from 1520 to 1566, whose campaigns brought much of central Hungary under Ottoman rule. His conquests culminated in the capture of Buda and the creation of Ottoman provincial rule.
Great Turkish War: A conflict from 1683 to 1699 in which a Habsburg-led coalition drove Ottoman forces from much of central Europe. Its campaigns ended Ottoman control over most of Hungary.
Royal Hungary: The Habsburg-ruled western and northern portion of the Hungarian kingdom after its sixteenth-century partition. It shared the old kingdom with Ottoman Hungary but remained under Habsburg government.
Timar: An Ottoman land-revenue grant assigned in return for military or administrative service. Timar revenues helped support Ottoman cavalry and provincial administration.
Siege of Buda (1541): The Ottoman seizure of Buda in 1541, which established direct rule over central Hungary. The capture made Buda the center of an Ottoman province.
Sokollu Mehmed Pasha: A prominent Ottoman grand vizier who served under three sultans from 1565 to 1579. He directed imperial governance during the consolidation of Ottoman power in Hungary.
Siege of Buda (1686): The 1686 Habsburg-led capture of Buda from the Ottoman Empire after a prolonged siege. The city’s fall marked the collapse of Ottoman rule in central Hungary.
Principality of Transylvania: An early modern polity in eastern Hungary, usually an Ottoman tributary state with substantial internal autonomy. Its indirect Ottoman dependence differed from the empire’s direct administration of central Hungary.
