Ottoman navy

The Ottoman navy was the empire’s seaborne military force, used to contest maritime routes, defend coasts, and support campaigns across the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and beyond.

Ottoman galley: A rowed warship used by the Ottoman navy, especially in Mediterranean warfare before sailing ships displaced it. Galleys supplied the oar power and maneuverability central to the navy’s early modern fleet.
Ottoman conquest of Constantinople: The 1453 capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire under Mehmed II. Control of the city gave the Ottomans a major maritime capital and strategic straits.
Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha: An Ottoman admiral and corsair who became grand admiral and helped establish Ottoman naval dominance in the sixteenth-century Mediterranean. His command and North African alliances expanded the fleet’s western Mediterranean influence.
Venetian navy: The maritime forces of the Republic of Venice, which defended its trade and possessions across the Mediterranean. Venice was a persistent rival for islands, shipping lanes, and influence in the eastern Mediterranean.
Ottoman Algeria: An Ottoman regency in North Africa, centered on Algiers and governed with substantial local autonomy. Its corsair ports and political ties gave the empire a western Mediterranean maritime foothold.
Tersane-i Amire: The Ottoman imperial shipyard at Istanbul, a major center for building and repairing naval vessels. This shipyard converted imperial resources into ships, equipment, and repairs.
Ottoman expansion into the Aegean: The Ottoman Empire’s gradual acquisition of islands and coastal territories in the Aegean Sea. Aegean expansion created the need to secure island routes and confront rival fleets.
Turgut Reis: A sixteenth-century Ottoman admiral and corsair who served as governor of Tripoli and fought across the Mediterranean. His campaigns extended Ottoman sea power along the North African coast.
Spanish Armada: The Spanish monarchy’s naval fleet, especially the force sent against England in 1588. Spanish naval power competed with Ottoman interests across the Mediterranean and North Africa.
Ottoman conquest of Cyprus: The Ottoman campaign that captured Cyprus from Venice in 1570–1571. The conquest secured a strategically placed island but intensified conflict with the Holy League.
