Ottoman–Safavid relations

Ottoman–Safavid relations encompassed rivalry, warfare, and diplomacy between two neighboring empires, shaped especially by territorial competition and competing claims to Islamic authority.

Battle of Chaldiran: The 1514 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Safavid army near Chaldiran in eastern Anatolia. Ottoman firearms and military organization helped establish an early advantage in the rivalry.
Safavid dynasty: An Iranian dynasty that ruled from 1501 to 1736 and established Twelver Shiism as the state religion. Its rise created a powerful neighbor whose territorial and religious claims challenged Ottoman authority.
Shah Abbas I: A Safavid shah who ruled from 1588 to 1629 and strengthened the empire’s army and central government. His campaigns recovered territory and his diplomacy exploited Ottoman commitments elsewhere.
Ottoman Empire: A transcontinental empire centered on Anatolia and the eastern Mediterranean that lasted from the late thirteenth century to 1922. Its imperial institutions and Sunni legitimacy formed the other side of the rivalry.
Iraq: A country in the Middle East whose territory includes the lower Tigris and Euphrates river valleys. Control of Baghdad and the shrines of southern Iraq repeatedly became a central point of contention.
Peace of Amasya: The 1555 agreement that ended the first major Ottoman–Safavid war and defined a provisional frontier. It turned intermittent warfare into a negotiated settlement that endured for decades.
Shah Ismail I: The founder of the Safavid dynasty, who unified Iran and established Twelver Shiism as its state religion. His expansion into Anatolia and religious influence among Turkmen communities alarmed the Ottomans.
Suleiman the Magnificent: An Ottoman sultan from 1520 to 1566 whose reign included campaigns against the Safavids and the capture of Baghdad. His eastern campaigns and the Peace of Amasya defined a pivotal phase of relations.
Sunni Islam: The largest branch of Islam, whose adherents recognize the early caliphs as legitimate successors to Muhammad. Ottoman rulers grounded their religious identity in Sunni institutions unlike the Safavid state.
Baghdad: The capital of modern Iraq, founded in the eighth century on the Tigris River. Its capture by each empire carried strategic, symbolic, and religious significance.
