Outer Hebrides

The Outer Hebrides are an island chain off Scotland’s northwest coast, also known as the Western Isles. Its principal islands include Lewis and Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, and Barra.

Lewis and Harris: The largest island in the Outer Hebrides, traditionally divided into Lewis in the north and Harris in the south. Its size and division anchor the chain’s northern and central geography.
Caledonian MacBrayne: A Scottish ferry operator serving routes between the mainland and many islands. Its ferries connect the Outer Hebrides with mainland ports and link islands within the chain.

Callanish Stones: A group of Neolithic stone circles and avenues on the Isle of Lewis. The stones are among the chain’s best-known prehistoric monuments.
North Uist: An island in the northern part of the Outer Hebrides, separated from Benbecula by a narrow strait. It is one of the principal islands in the chain’s northern group.
Stornoway: The largest town in the Outer Hebrides and the principal port of Lewis. It is the chain’s main population and service center.
Crofting: A Scottish system of small-scale landholding and agriculture, often combining cultivation with common grazing rights. Crofting has shaped land use and livelihoods in the islands.
Gearrannan Blackhouse Village: A preserved settlement of traditional thatched stone houses on Lewis. Its buildings document a distinctive form of island housing.
Benbecula: An island in the Outer Hebrides between North Uist and South Uist. Its position links the two larger Uist islands.
Barra Airport: An airport on Barra whose scheduled flights use the island’s tidal beach as a runway. Its beach runway is a distinctive response to the chain’s geography.
