Ovary

An ovary is a reproductive gland that produces eggs and hormones, including estrogen and progesterone. In humans, the two ovaries also support the maturation and release of eggs during menstrual cycles.

Ovarian follicle: A structure in the ovary containing an immature egg and surrounding cells that support its development. Follicles are the ovarian structures in which eggs mature.
Oogenesis: The formation and development of female gametes, including their meiotic maturation. Eggs produced by ovaries arise through this specialized developmental process.
Ovarian cancer: A group of cancers that arise in or near the ovaries. Malignant growths can originate in ovarian tissue or nearby reproductive structures.
Testis: A male reproductive gland that produces sperm and hormones, including testosterone. Testes are the other type of gonad, producing sperm rather than eggs.
Gonad: A reproductive organ that produces gametes and sex hormones. Ovaries are one form of this broader class of reproductive organs.
Folliculogenesis: The growth and maturation of ovarian follicles from early stages to ovulation or degeneration. This process describes how ovarian follicles develop across the reproductive cycle.
Oocyte: An immature female germ cell that can develop into an ovum. The ovarian egg is an oocyte at a stage of its development.
Polycystic ovary syndrome: A hormonal disorder associated with irregular ovulation, elevated androgens, and polycystic-appearing ovaries. This common disorder disrupts ovarian hormone production and ovulation.
Uterus: A muscular reproductive organ in which an embryo can implant and develop. The uterus receives an embryo; ovaries produce eggs and reproductive hormones.
Gonadal ridge: An embryonic structure from which the gonads develop. The ovarian lineage begins as the embryonic gonadal ridge.
