Ovoviviparity

Ovoviviparity is a reproductive mode in which embryos hatch from eggs retained inside a parent, usually nourished by yolk rather than maternal transfer of nutrients.

Viviparity: Reproduction in which embryos develop inside a parent and offspring are born live. Unlike ovoviviparity, viviparity involves live birth rather than hatching from retained eggs.
Embryo: An animal in an early stage of development before birth or hatching. Ovoviviparity describes how an embryo develops and exits the parent's body.
Common European viper: A venomous snake native to Europe and parts of Asia, also known as the adder. Females retain developing eggs and give birth to young that have hatched internally.
Aplacental viviparity: Live-bearing reproduction in which embryos receive little or no nourishment through a placenta. This label overlaps with ovoviviparity when embryos rely chiefly on yolk but are born live.
Oviparity: Reproduction in which animals lay eggs that develop and hatch outside the parent's body. Ovoviviparity retains eggs internally instead of depositing them for external development.
Fertilization: The union of sperm and egg that initiates development of a new organism. Eggs retained in ovoviviparous species are generally fertilized internally.
Garter snake: A group of nonvenomous snakes in the genus Thamnophis, native to North America. Many garter snakes retain eggs until young hatch within the reproductive tract.
Placental viviparity: Live-bearing reproduction in which a placenta transfers substantial nutrients from parent to embryo. It contrasts with yolk-dependent development in retained eggs.
Yolk: Nutrient-rich material stored in an egg to support embryonic development. In the usual form of ovoviviparity, yolk supplies the embryo's nourishment.
Internal fertilization: Fertilization in which sperm and egg unite inside the reproductive tract of an organism. Internal fertilization commonly precedes the retention of eggs in ovoviviparous animals.
