Oxalate

Oxalate is the dianion of oxalic acid, found in many plants and produced in human metabolism. It binds minerals such as calcium and can form poorly soluble salts.

Calcium oxalate: A poorly soluble salt formed from calcium ions and oxalate ions. Calcium oxalate crystals make up most kidney stones.
Kidney stone disease: A condition in which mineral crystals form in the kidneys or urinary tract. Oxalate is a major component of common kidney stones.
Oxalic acid: A small dicarboxylic acid whose conjugate base is oxalate. Oxalate is the deprotonated form of oxalic acid.
Rhubarb: A cultivated plant whose edible stalks contain substantial oxalate. Rhubarb is a familiar high-oxalate food example.
Oxalate nephropathy: Kidney injury caused by calcium oxalate crystal deposition in renal tissue. Excess oxalate can crystallize within the kidneys and damage tissue.
Primary hyperoxaluria: A group of inherited disorders in which the liver produces excessive oxalate. These disorders show how metabolic oxalate overproduction can damage kidneys.
Anion: An atom or molecule with a net negative electric charge. Oxalate carries a negative charge in biological fluids.
Spinach: A leafy green vegetable that contains substantial oxalate. Spinach illustrates how a nutritious food can also contribute dietary oxalate.
Glyoxylate: A small aldehyde-containing organic anion that serves as a metabolic precursor to oxalate. Human metabolism can convert glyoxylate into oxalate.
Low-oxalate diet: An eating pattern that limits foods containing substantial oxalate. Dietary restriction may be used for selected people with recurrent calcium oxalate stones.
