Oxfam

Oxfam is an international confederation of organizations working to alleviate poverty, reduce inequality, and respond to humanitarian emergencies.

Humanitarian aid: Assistance that protects lives and meets essential needs during crises. Oxfam provides emergency assistance in conflicts and disasters.
Oxford Committee for Famine Relief: A British committee founded in 1942 to campaign for famine relief in occupied Greece. This committee was the original organization behind the name Oxfam.
Cecil Jackson-Cole: A British entrepreneur and philanthropist who helped build Oxfam’s fundraising and retail operations. His organizing helped turn the original committee into a larger public institution.
Oxfam shop: A charity retail shop operated by an Oxfam organization, often selling donated goods. Oxfam’s shops became a distinctive source of income and public visibility.
International Committee of the Red Cross: An independent humanitarian organization whose mandate derives from the Geneva Conventions and related statutes. Unlike Oxfam’s confederation, it has a distinct treaty-based mandate and institutional structure.
Emergency water supply: The delivery of safe water and sanitation during crises. Oxfam’s emergency teams help restore water and sanitation services.
Greek famine of 1941–1942: A catastrophic famine under Axis occupation that caused mass death in Greece during World War II. The committee’s founding campaign sought to relieve famine in occupied Greece.
Diana, Princess of Wales: A member of the British royal family known for high-profile humanitarian work. Her 1997 visit to Oxfam projects in Bosnia drew attention to its work.
Make Trade Fair: An Oxfam campaign launched in 2002 calling for fairer international trade rules. The campaign made trade policy a prominent part of Oxfam’s public advocacy.
CARE International: A confederation of humanitarian and development organizations working to fight poverty and social injustice. CARE shares Oxfam’s international reach but developed through a different organizational history.
