Oxyphil cells (parathyroid)

Oxyphil cells are large, acidophilic cells in the parathyroid glands, distinguished by abundant mitochondria. Their physiological function remains uncertain.

Parathyroid gland: An endocrine gland that regulates blood calcium chiefly by secreting parathyroid hormone. Oxyphil cells occur in this gland alongside the hormone-secreting chief cells.
Oxidative phosphorylation: The mitochondrial process that uses an electron transport chain to produce ATP. Abundant mitochondria point to substantial oxidative metabolism in oxyphil cells.

Parathyroid gland histology: The microscopic organization of parathyroid tissue, including chief cells, oxyphil cells, and supporting stroma. It shows the characteristic distribution of oxyphil cells within normal gland tissue.
Mitochondrion: A membrane-bound organelle that generates most cellular ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. The dense mitochondrial population gives oxyphil cells their characteristic eosinophilic appearance.
