Ozone depletion potential

Ozone depletion potential (ODP) measures how much a substance is expected to deplete stratospheric ozone relative to a reference compound, usually CFC-11.

Chlorine radical: A chlorine atom or reactive chlorine-containing species with an unpaired electron. Chlorine radicals released from many ozone-depleting substances catalyze ozone destruction.
Montreal Protocol: An international treaty adopted in 1987 to phase out substances that deplete the ozone layer. Its control schedules use ODP-weighted consumption to measure regulated substances.
Ozone depletion: The reduction of ozone in the stratosphere through natural processes or chemical reactions involving human-emitted substances. ODP expresses a substance’s contribution to this broader atmospheric change.
Global warming potential: A measure of the heat trapped by a greenhouse gas relative to carbon dioxide over a specified time horizon. Unlike ODP, it measures climate forcing rather than stratospheric ozone depletion.
Bromine radical: A bromine atom or reactive bromine-containing species with an unpaired electron. Bromine radicals destroy stratospheric ozone efficiently and help explain high ODP values.
Ozone-depleting potential of halons: The high relative ozone-depletion capacity of halons, fire suppressants containing bromine. Halon ODP values show why bromine-containing fire suppressants received strict controls.
Ozone-depleting potential of CFC-11: The reference ozone-depletion potential assigned to trichlorofluoromethane, commonly known as CFC-11. Other ODP values are commonly reported relative to CFC-11, assigned a value of one.
Ozone depletion potential of HFCs: The relative ozone-depletion capacity of hydrofluorocarbons, which contain no chlorine or bromine. HFCs generally have zero ODP, though many have substantial global warming potential.
Stratospheric ozone: Ozone in the stratosphere that absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. ODP quantifies a substance’s impact on this protective ozone layer.
Ozone-depleting potential of CFCs: The relative ozone-depletion capacity of chlorofluorocarbons, a major class of ozone-depleting chemicals. CFCs provide familiar ODP comparisons, with CFC-11 serving as the reference compound.
