Palatalization

Palatalization is a consonant articulation or sound change in which the tongue moves toward the hard palate. It can alter a consonant’s place of articulation or add a secondary palatal gesture.

Secondary articulation: A consonant articulation involving a primary constriction and a simultaneous secondary gesture elsewhere in the vocal tract. Palatalization often adds a palatal gesture while retaining the consonant’s primary place of articulation.
Slavic palatalization: A set of historical and synchronic palatalization patterns in Slavic languages. Slavic languages display prominent changes in consonants before front vowels and related environments.
Velarization: A secondary articulation in which the tongue body moves toward the soft palate. Velarization raises the tongue toward the velum rather than the hard palate.
First palatalization of Slavic: A prehistoric Slavic sound change that altered velar consonants before front vowels. It exemplifies a conditioned historical shift from velars toward palatal or postalveolar sounds.
Palatal consonant: A consonant articulated with the tongue body against or near the hard palate. This is the primary place of articulation produced by some forms of palatalization.
Japanese palatalization: Palatalized consonant patterns in Japanese, especially those associated with y-glide sequences. Japanese contrasts include consonants shaped by following palatal glides.
Labialization: A secondary articulation in which the lips are rounded during a consonant. It adds a lip gesture, unlike palatalization’s tongue gesture.
Second palatalization of Slavic: A Slavic sound change that affected velars after front vowels in specific historical environments. Its distinct conditioning shows that related palatalizing changes can follow different pathways.
Coarticulation: The overlap of articulatory gestures for neighboring speech sounds. A neighboring front vowel or glide can trigger palatal movement through overlapping gestures.
Irish consonant mutation: Morphologically conditioned changes to initial consonants in Irish and other Celtic languages. Irish lenition can produce palatalized consonants in particular grammatical environments.
