Palau

Palau is an island country in the western Pacific, east of the Philippines and north of Indonesia. Its territory includes volcanic islands and the Rock Islands, a limestone archipelago surrounded by coral reefs.

Koror: Koror is Palau’s largest city and its main commercial center. It is the country’s principal urban center, though Ngerulmud is the capital.
Palau National Marine Sanctuary: Palau National Marine Sanctuary is a protected ocean area covering most of Palau’s exclusive economic zone. Its large no-take zone makes ocean protection a central national policy.
Spanish East Indies: The Spanish East Indies was Spain’s colonial possession in the western Pacific, administered from the Philippines. Spain claimed Palau in the nineteenth century and sold its Pacific possessions to Germany in 1899.
Micronesia: Micronesia is a region of thousands of islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Palau is commonly grouped within this geographic and cultural region.
Ngerulmud: Ngerulmud is Palau’s capital, located in Melekeok State on Babeldaob. Its government complex shifted the capital away from Koror in 2006.
Rock Islands Southern Lagoon: The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon is a marine and limestone landscape in Palau recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its reefs and karst islands are a major focus of conservation and tourism.
German New Guinea: German New Guinea was Germany’s colonial territory in the southwestern Pacific from 1884 to 1914. Germany governed Palau after acquiring it from Spain in 1899.
Federated States of Micronesia: The Federated States of Micronesia is a sovereign Pacific country composed of four states spread across the Caroline Islands. It shares a colonial history and Compact relationship with Palau but is a separate federation.
Babeldaob: Babeldaob is Palau’s largest island and the second-largest island in Micronesia. It contains Ngerulmud and most of Palau’s land area.
Jellyfish Lake: Jellyfish Lake is a marine lake in Palau’s Rock Islands, known for its population of golden jellyfish. Its isolated ecosystem draws visitors and requires careful ecological management.
