Cross-bedding : Inclined layers formed as sediment accumulates on the lee side of migrating ripples or dunes. Its foreset dip directions commonly provide a direct estimate of ancient flow direction.
Sedimentary structure : A physical feature formed during sediment deposition or shortly afterward. Paleocurrent indicators are a directional subset of these preserved features.
Facies analysis : The interpretation of rock characteristics to infer depositional environments and processes. Current directions help distinguish facies formed by rivers, deltas, and marine flows.
Wave-generated ripple marks : Symmetric or near-symmetric bedforms produced by oscillatory wave motion. Their bidirectional orbital motion contrasts with the usually one-way signal of current ripples.
