Paleoenvironmental reconstruction uses geological, biological, and chemical evidence to infer past climates, landscapes, and ecosystems.

Proxy (climate): An indirect measurement used to infer a past environmental variable. Pollen, isotopes, and sediment properties act as proxies for conditions not measured directly.
Paleoclimatology: The study of Earth's climate before modern instrumental records. Climate reconstruction is a major part of inferring past environments.
Pollen analysis: The analysis of fossil pollen assemblages to infer past vegetation and environmental conditions. It turns pollen preserved in lake and peat deposits into vegetation histories.
Proxy calibration: The process of relating proxy measurements to environmental variables using observations or experiments. Calibration tests whether a proxy responds consistently to the condition being reconstructed.
Palynology: The study of pollen and spores, including their identification and distribution in sediments. Changing pollen assemblages reveal shifts in vegetation and surrounding environments.
Paleontology: The study of ancient life through fossils and other traces of past organisms. Fossils provide evidence for the organisms and habitats present in earlier environments.
Dendroclimatology: The study of tree-ring patterns to reconstruct past climate and environmental conditions. Tree rings provide annually resolved records of growth conditions.
Equifinality: The condition in which different processes or histories produce similar observable outcomes. Similar sediment or biological signals can arise from different environmental causes.
Stable isotope analysis: Measurement of isotope ratios to investigate sources, processes, or environmental conditions. Oxygen and carbon isotope ratios can record changes in temperature, water balance, and vegetation.
Stratigraphy: The study of rock and sediment layers, their sequence, and their relationships in time. Layer order helps establish the sequence of environmental changes.
